The petition was backed by the Coalition for a Healthy Massachusetts, which needed 74,574 signatures to advance the initiative to the legislature. They gathered 78,301 certified signatures, giving them a healthy margin over that first threshold.
The next step would have been for the state legislature to enact the proposal legislatively. However, the May 5, 2026, deadline for that passed without action from the legislature. That sent organizers back out to collect a second round of signatures, an additional 12,429, which they needed to submit by July 1. The state confirmed they cleared that bar, and the measure is now officially certified to appear on the November 3, 2026 ballot.
