People were adding concentrates to joints long before recreational dispensaries existed. Whether it was a little hash mixed in or a joint coated in kief, giving your smoke an extra kick is nothing new.
These days, infused pre-rolls come in all kinds of combinations, from liquid diamonds and live resin to bubble hash and added flavors. But are they worth picking up over a regular pre-roll? It really comes down to your tolerance, the flavors you enjoy, and what you’re looking to get out of your smoke.
Why Choose an Infused Pre-Roll?
The biggest difference is potency. Regular pre-rolls contain just flower, while infused versions add concentrates like distillate, live resin, liquid diamonds, or hash. That extra concentrate can bump up the THC considerably, which is part of the appeal for experienced smokers looking for something stronger.
If you’ve built up a higher tolerance, an infused pre-roll might offer the extra kick you’re looking for without having to add concentrates yourself. But stronger doesn’t automatically mean better, and not everyone needs the extra THC. Sometimes a good old fashioned pre-roll is exactly what you want.
More Than Potency: Flavor and Aroma
Strength isn’t the only reason people enjoy infused pre-rolls. Some bring out the natural flavors of the flower and concentrate, while others use added terpenes to create everything from citrus and berry to sweeter, candy-inspired flavors. Terpenes are what give cannabis much of its smell and taste, and adding them during production can bring out flavors you wouldn’t normally get from flower alone.
Pioneer Valley’s Firecrackers are a great example. Made with 75% flower and 25% terpene-enhanced distillate, they come in flavors like Honeydew, Blueberry Muffin, and CranPom. Cali Blaze also has fruit-inspired options, while Vibez offers infused pre-rolls like Apricot Jam, Grape Gas, and Candy Store. If you like trying different flavors, there’s plenty to explore beyond a regular joint.
What Difference Does the Concentrate Make?
The concentrate inside an infused pre-roll can change more than just its strength. Live resin is made using fresh-frozen cannabis to help preserve more of the plant’s natural aroma, while bubble hash brings in concentrated trichomes from the flower. Distillate is more refined and is often paired with added terpenes for a stronger flavor profile.
For something more hash-focused, OMG (Original Massachusetts Growers) makes its Bubble Bones infused pre-rolls. Shrek Breath combines Northern Lights #5 flower with Garlic Freeze bubble hash.
Happy Valley takes a different approach with its Banana Lemon Cupcake and Super Lemon Haze 2.0 infused pre-rolls, which use full-spectrum live resin. This type of infusion emphasizes more of the original plant’s cannabinoids and aromatic compounds, making it an appealing option for smokers who enjoy the natural flavor and character of their flower.
Liquid Diamonds and Multi-Infused Pre-Rolls
Some brands take things further by combining different concentrates in the same joint. Liquid diamonds are made from concentrated THCA, which turns into THC when heated. They can also be paired with live resin, combining high potency with more of the original plant’s flavor and aroma.
Cali Blaze offers 1.2g liquid-diamond-infused singles, along with five-packs that combine liquid diamonds and live resin. Sluggers’ JUICED lineup also mixes different concentrates, with certain products incorporating hash and kief. If you’re interested in trying something beyond a standard distillate infusion, these give you a few different ways to explore it.
Do Infused Pre-Rolls Smoke Differently?
They definitely can. The way a pre-roll is infused can affect how it burns, how it tastes, and even how often you need to relight it. Some have concentrates mixed directly in, while others have oil running through the middle or a coating on the outside. Heavier infusions can sometimes burn more slowly, but too much concentrate in one spot can also cause clogging or uneven burning.
Kief-coated pre-rolls are another popular style. Cali Blaze’s Tarantula line uses liquid diamonds with an outside coating of kief, adding another layer of concentrate. While these can look impressive, the quality of the flower and how well the joint is rolled still matter. Nobody wants to spend half their smoke trying to keep it lit.
Are Infused Pre-Rolls Right for Everyone?
Not necessarily. If you’ve been smoking for years and have a higher tolerance, an infused pre-roll might be a nice change from your usual joint. But if you’re newer to cannabis, or just prefer something milder, the extra THC can be a lot more intense than expected. Too much can leave you feeling anxious, dizzy, or uncomfortable.
If you’re trying one for the first time, start with a small amount and see how you feel before going back for more. And if you prefer regular flower, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to what you enjoy. We’ve also covered why THC isn’t everything in our guide to what THC percentage really tells you.
