Congratulations, Connecticut! Celebrate Marijuana Legalization by Getting to Know Your Laws

Sometimes, it’s hard to believe that it’s already been five whole years since marijauna was legalized here in Massachusetts. Of course, it’s even harder to believe that it is taking other states this long to catch up. Whenever the news comes up that another state has made the decision to legalize medicinal and/or recreational marijuana, we view it as a win.

That’s why we want to take a moment and share in the win with our neighbors just to the south in Connecticut.

VIDEO: Connecticut Legalization

As of July 1st, 2021, marijuana possession is legal in Connecticut. As is always the case with legalization, it’s up to the consumer to know what’s actually legal - and what can still land them on the wrong side of the law. The Vault may not be based in Connecticut, but we want to use today’s post to help Connecticut residents better understand the implications of their state’s new marijuana legalization bill.

What Does the Bill Accomplish?

We’ll forgive you for not knowing every detail within Connecticut’s legalization bill - it is over 300 pages long, after all. The short version is that:

  • For adults over the age of 21, the sale and cultivation of marijuana in Connecticut is now legal.

  • Legalization took effect on July 1st, 2021 - meaning the new laws are on the book and active.

  • Criminal convictions for certain marijuana charges are being erased.

  • Law enforcement is stepping up its efforts to combat driving under the influence of marijuana.

Legalization does not mean you’re free to do what you want, when you want, when it comes to growing, possessing, and using marijuana products. We understand you’re excited, and we are too. We just want to help ensure your excitement doesn’t run counter to compliance.

How Much Cannabis Is Actually Legal?

You can’t stock up on cannabis the way you might build out a bar in your home. Cannabis products may be legal, but to remain in compliance with the law you can only have a certain amount in your home and on your person at any given time.

Individuals in Connecticut may keep up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis on their person now. Additionally, up to 5 ounces may be held in one’s home or in their vehicle’s glove box or trunk, provided that the container it’s kept in is locked.

Can I Smoke Marijuana in Public?

No - in fact, cannabis cannot legally be smoked in any area where cigarette smoking is not allowed. Restaurants, hospitals, and most workplaces won’t let you smoke on their properties, for instance. State parks also prohibit smoking marijuana, and violators will be met with $250 fines.

You also are not allowed to smoke marijuana in hotels, but possessing and using other forms of cannabis in private areas of hotels cannot be banned. As you can imagine, it is still very much illegal to use marijuana in any form if you are in a motor vehicle - driver or passenger, it doesn’t matter which.

Can I Grow My Own Marijuana?

If you’re so inclined, then yes - just not yet. The way the bill is written, anyone over the age of 21 is allowed to grow their own marijuana, but not until July 1st of 2023. So, we still have a couple of years to wait on that element of legalization.

Keep in mind that the amount of plants you may have in your home is also regulated. It’s legal to grow your own, but you can’t start a farm in your house. Up to, but no more, than 12 cannabis plants may be possessed at any time.

So When Can I Go to the Store?

It’s going to be a little while before you can walk into a recreational dispensary in Connecticut and buy regulated marijuana products. Current estimates suggest mid-2022, but even that is subject to change due the timing of the legislation being passed. Of course, our neighbors in bordering states like Connecticut and Rhode Island are always welcome to stop by The Vault.
